St. George's, Grenada: What to Do, Eat and See

Grenada's capital parish, home to Grand Anse beach, the Carenage harbour and most of the island's restaurants and hotels.

St. George is the parish most people mean when they say Grenada. It holds the capital, the famous beach, the busiest harbour, and the biggest share of the island's restaurants, hotels, and nightlife. If you are visiting, you will spend most of your time here. If you live here, this is home.

The capital, St. George's, is one of the prettiest harbour towns in the Caribbean. Its buildings climb the hills around the Carenage, a working horseshoe waterfront where fishing boats tie up and ferries come and go. The town is small enough to walk, colourful enough to explore, and compact enough to see properly in an afternoon.

Explore the capital

Start at the Carenage and walk the waterfront. Fort George stands above the town on the hill, a stone stronghold with 360-degree views over the harbour and the southwest coast. It is worth the short climb. The Saturday morning market square is a real one: spice vendors, fresh produce, chaos, and a genuine slice of island life. If the heat gets too much, the National Museum is indoors, air-conditioned, and holds stories of the island's past. The whole town is compact; just pick a street and walk.

Grand Anse and the beach strip

Grand Anse is Grenada's most famous beach, two miles of soft sand on the southwest coast, calm and clean, backed by beach bars and hotels. It is the place to swim, sunbathe, and settle in for a long lunch. Just next door, Morne Rouge is the quieter cove if you want less crowd. The south coast strip stretches south through Lance aux Epines and Prickly Bay, a string of calm bays with restaurants and bars where the drinking and dining happens. Everything is within a short drive.

Getting there and getting around

St. George parish is compact and easy to navigate. The capital is walkable on foot, though parking on market Saturday or a cruise day can be tight. Taxis are plentiful and cheap for moving between the town and the beach. Rental cars are useful if you want to explore the south coast at your own pace. The beaches and main restaurants are a 10-15 minute drive south.

Know before you go

The capital gets busy, especially on a Saturday morning market or when cruise ships are in port. Go early if you want a quieter experience. The south coast strip is where most of the nightlife and dining happens, so if you plan an evening, pick a restaurant ahead and arrange your taxi home. Cash is useful everywhere, though the capital and main restaurants take cards. The parking situation means taxis to town are often the smarter choice, especially in the evening.

The businesses below are the St. George spots worth knowing, across food, drink, stays, and services. Every one is on Island Link, so you can check the hours, find it on the map, and get directions.
