Nine Mornings is a season, not a single day. For nine mornings before Christmas Eve, from 16 to 24 December, St. Vincent and the Grenadines gets up before the sun, again and again. Here is what actually happens once you are out there.
Bay Street Before Sunrise
The heart of it is Bay Street in Kingstown, which comes alive while most of the world is still asleep. Flambeaus light the dark before dawn, carolling groups and string bands move through, drumming carries down the street, and steel pan players set up wherever there is room. Food stalls open early too, so the smell of cinnamon, nutmeg and coconut turnovers frying reaches you before the music does. Hosts along the route share hot drinks and simple breakfast foods with whoever stops to listen.
Sea Baths and Bicycle Races
For a lot of Vincentians, the morning starts in the water. A sea bath before the day heats up is its own small tradition, and it pairs naturally with an early start. Bicycle racing is just as central. Riders take to the streets in the dark hours, and watching (or joining) a Nine Mornings bicycle race is one of the clearest signs the festival is properly under way.
Carolling, Steel Pan and String Bands
Music runs through every one of the nine mornings. Carolling competitions, church choirs, steel pan bands and string bands serenading house to house all overlap through the season, building toward Christmas Eve. If you want to understand where the tradition comes from, this is it: music carried door to door rather than performed from a stage.
Games, Storytelling and Light-Up
Beyond the music, Nine Mornings mornings bring games, storytelling and "light-up", the strings of lights and decoration that go up around community venues for the season. A best-village competition runs alongside the main festival, so villages compete on their own light-up and celebrations too.
Beyond Kingstown
Kingstown is the biggest gathering, but Nine Mornings happens across St. Vincent and throughout the Grenadine islands, including Bequia. If you are staying outside the capital, ask locally about the nearest village celebration. Chances are there is one within reach.
