Nine Mornings for First-Timers: What to Know Before You Go

What to expect, what to bring, and how to last all nine mornings if this is your first Nine Mornings in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

If this is your first Nine Mornings, here is the honest rundown. What to expect, what to bring, and how to still be up for it on morning nine.

What to expect

It starts early, and it means it. Bay Street in Kingstown is already going by 4am: flambeaus lighting the way, carolling, drumming, steel pan, string bands moving house to house, and food stalls with the day's first coconut turnovers. Turning up at what feels like the middle of the night is normal here, not early.

It is nine mornings, not one. The festival runs from 16 to 24 December. Nobody expects you to catch every single one. Pick the mornings you can manage and treat the rest as a bonus if you happen to be up.

It is a community event before it is a spectacle. Nine Mornings grew out of church and neighbourhood tradition, and it still feels that way. People host each other with hot drinks and simple food as the serenaders pass. You are welcome to join in, not just watch.

What to bring

  • A light layer. Pre-dawn on the coast can feel cooler than the Caribbean day that follows. A light jacket or wrap is enough.
  • Comfortable shoes. You will be standing and walking on real streets for a couple of hours before breakfast.
  • Cash. The food stalls and vendors along Bay Street are cash-first.
  • A flashlight or your phone light. Some stretches between the lit-up gathering points are dark.

Etiquette

  • Greet people. Nine Mornings is neighbourly. A "good morning" goes a long way at 4am.
  • Join the singing if you know the words, and listen well if you don't. Either is fine.
  • Ask before you film someone up close, especially inside a church service or a private serenade.
  • Support the food stalls. Buying a coconut turnover or a hot drink is how the season's small vendors make the mornings work.

How to pace yourself

The mistake first-timers make is trying to do all nine mornings at full energy and burning out by Christmas Eve. Sleep in on the mornings you skip. Eat a real meal later in the day even after an early breakfast on the street. If you are also travelling around St. Vincent and the Grenadines for the season, leave a slow day in the middle rather than stacking early starts back to back.

Where to start

Bay Street in Kingstown is the biggest and easiest gathering to find on any given morning. If you are staying elsewhere on St. Vincent or out in the Grenadines, including Bequia, ask locally about that community's own Nine Mornings gathering and light-up. There is usually one nearby.
