St. Patrick is the parish that rewards the drive north. It has more to see for a day trip than almost anywhere on the island outside the capital, and it packs history, rum, water, and wild coast into one rewarding corner. The journey is real (about an hour from the south coast), but if you only make one drive away from Grand Anse, make it this one.
The parish is built around Sauteurs, the main town in the north, and radiates outward from there: north to the wild beaches, south to the estates and the distillery, inland to the forested hills. A full day here will give you a genuine sense of what the northern end of Grenada feels like, far from the tourist hustle.
Carib's Leap and the north coast
Just above Sauteurs sits Carib's Leap, a cliff face overlooking the sea. History marks this as the place where, according to the island's accounts, the last Caribs jumped rather than surrender to the French in the 1650s. It is a sobering, striking spot with a view to match: the water far below, the coast stretching out, a sense of defiance and tragedy held in the landscape.
From here, the coast turns spectacular. Levera Beach is wild, near-empty, backed by a national park, with Sugar Loaf island offshore and turtles nesting in season. It is not a swimming beach in the traditional sense. It is a place to walk, to look, to feel the Atlantic's power. Bathway, close by, is different: a natural reef holds back the Atlantic swell, so you can actually swim in calmer water. Both deserve the drive north.
River Antoine and Belmont Estate
South and inland from Sauteurs sit the rum and the estates. River Antoine is the oldest working water-powered distillery in the Caribbean. It still makes rum much as it did over two centuries ago: using a waterwheel to crush cane, fermenting in wooden vats, distilling in copper stills. It is a genuine step back in time, and the tour shows you exactly how it works. The rum is strong and the history is real.
Belmont Estate, a short drive away, pairs a working plantation tour with cocoa roasting, a small museum, and a good local lunch. Together, Belmont and River Antoine make an easy, rich half-day. You see how the land has worked, meet the people doing it, eat local food, and come away understanding this part of the island properly.
Getting there and what to expect
The north is a real drive from the south coast, at least an hour depending on traffic. The road is good but winding. Start early, and string your stops together rather than trying to dash up and back: Belmont and River Antoine in the morning, a swim or walk at Bathway or Levera in the afternoon, back to the south coast by evening. A guide is useful for Levera if you want to know about the turtles and the national park. Rental car gives you flexibility. Taxis from the south coast are possible but costly for the round trip.
Know before you go
Bring cash. ATMs are few and cards are not widely accepted at the estates or the smaller restaurants. Food options in Sauteurs are basic and modest, so bring supplies from the south coast or eat at one of the estates. The north is wilder than the south coast and weather can change quickly, especially at Levera Beach. Bring reef-safe sunscreen for any swimming. The coast at Levera has no lifeguards and the water can be rough, so respect the conditions. Accommodation is limited to a few guesthouses, so book ahead if you want to stay overnight. Most people make it a long day trip.
The estate tours operate on schedules (usually by appointment), so check ahead and book before you drive north. The beach walks and village stop need no booking, just time.
