Getting Around Grenada During Spicemas 2026
Grenada is small, but during Spicemas the roads get busy and some of them close entirely. A little planning here saves you from missing the fete you paid for. Here is how to move around the island during carnival 2026.
Buses (the reggae buses)
Grenada's minibuses are the cheap, local way to get around, and riding one is part of the experience. They run set routes, they are cash only in EC dollars, and they leave when they are full rather than on a schedule. Great for daytime and getting between towns. Less reliable late at night and during the big road days, when routes get disrupted.
Taxis
The most flexible option, especially at night and during carnival week. Grenada taxis often run fixed rates rather than meters, so agree the price before you get in. Save a driver's number when you find a good one, because a reliable driver during Spicemas is worth a lot. On the big nights, book ahead if you can, since demand is high and roads are slow.
Car rental
Worth it if you are staying somewhere quieter, like Lance aux Epines or the south, or you want to explore the island beyond carnival. Note that Grenada requires a local permit on top of your license, which rental companies can usually sort for you. Remember you drive on the left. And during the parade days, expect to park well back from the action and walk in.

Road closures during carnival
On Carnival Monday and Tuesday, and around J'ouvert, roads in and around the parade route close and traffic backs up across the area. Do not plan to drive right up to the action on those days. Get close the night before, or plan to park back and walk.

The simple plan
For most visitors: buses in the day, a trusted taxi at night, and your own two feet on the big road days. Sort a go-to driver early in the week and the rest gets easy.
