Jab Jab: The Heart of Grenada's Spicemas
Every carnival in the Caribbean has its pretty side, the feathers and the sequins on the road on the last day. Grenada has that too. But if you want to understand Spicemas, you have to look at the Jab Jab, and the Jab Jab is not pretty. It is older, it is darker, and it is the part locals will tell you is the real carnival.
What is Jab Jab
Jab Jab comes from the French patois for devil, "diable." The masqueraders cover themselves head to toe in black oil, sometimes tar or grease, and move through the streets in a slow, heavy pull. You will see horns, chains, and sometimes a live snake or a skull. They chant, they beat on tins and drums, and they pull chains along the road in a rhythm you feel in your chest before you hear it.
It is loud, it is a little frightening the first time, and that is the point. The Jab Jab is a story about breaking free. It goes back to the days of slavery on the island, and the oil and the chains carry that history straight into the present. When a band of Jabs comes down the road at J'ouvert, you are not watching a show. You are watching Grenada remember something.
Jab Jab and J'ouvert
You will see Jab Jab at its strongest at J'ouvert, the pre-dawn opening of Carnival Monday. The dark suits the oil and the mood. Bands move through the streets before sunrise, and by the time the light comes up, half the crowd is marked with oil too, because the Jabs will find you.
A word of warning that locals give every newcomer, and it is a real one. Do not wear anything you love to J'ouvert. The oil does not come out. Old clothes, closed shoes, and a good attitude are all you need. Our first-timer guide covers the rest.
Where to see Jab Jab at Spicemas 2026
J'ouvert is Carnival Monday, August 10, from around 3 AM. That is when the Jab Jab bands are strongest and most visible, moving through the streets of St. George's in the dark before dawn.
The safest way to see it well is to be near the J'ouvert route before it starts. Stand where you can watch a band come toward you and pass. Give them room. If you want to jump in, you will get oiled, so commit or step back. Wear clothes you do not care about and closed shoes.
Why it matters
People come to Grenada for the fetes and the boat rides, and those are worth every dollar. But the Jab Jab is the thing you will still be thinking about a year later. It is the reason Spicemas is not just another carnival on the calendar. It is Grenada's own.
Jab Jab is one part of the season. See the full Spicemas 2026 guide for everything happening, or read about J'ouvert next.
