J'ouvert in Grenada: What to Expect at Spicemas 2026
Ask anyone who has done Spicemas what their favorite part was, and a lot of them will say J'ouvert. Not the pretty costumes, not the big stage shows. The one that happens in the dark, before the sun comes up, covered in paint and oil. It is the rawest few hours of the whole season, and it is where Spicemas really begins.
What J'ouvert is
J'ouvert opens Carnival Monday. The name comes from the French patois for daybreak, "jour ouvert," and that is exactly the window it lives in. It starts in the dark, well before dawn, and it runs until the sun comes up.
There are no fancy costumes here. People come out in old clothes and cover themselves and each other in paint, oil, mud, and powder. Trucks roll slow through the streets with soca pushing the crowd forward. The Jab Jab bands come out at their strongest, black with oil, pulling chains. You move with the crowd, you get marked, and by sunrise you are part of it whether you planned to be or not.
When and where
J'ouvert 2026 is Carnival Monday, August 10, from around 3 AM. It runs through the early morning hours until the sun is well up, typically wrapping around 8–9 AM before people go rest before Monday Night Mas. The route runs through the streets of St. George's. Ask your accommodation or any local where the bands are gathering closest to you, then follow the sound.
The best plan is to be near the route before it starts, ideally with a group. Once it is moving, you follow it.
How to do your first J'ouvert right
- Wear clothes you will throw away. The paint and oil do not come out. This is not a maybe.
- Closed-toe shoes you do not love. You are walking real roads in the dark for hours.
- Go with people. It is more fun and it is smarter. Agree on a meeting spot in case phones die.
- Protect your phone. A cheap waterproof pouch saves the night.
- Decide how in you want to be. If you do not want to get oiled, stand back and watch a band pass. If you do, step in. There is no half measure once the Jabs find you.
- Pace the rum. J'ouvert is the start of a very long day that ends with Pretty Mas. Drink water too.
