Spicemas for First-Timers: A Grenada Carnival Survival Guide

What to pack, what to expect, and how to last till Tuesday at your first Spicemas.

Spicemas for First-Timers: A Grenada Carnival Survival Guide

If this is your first Spicemas, welcome. You are in for one of the best weeks of your life. It can also be a lot if you walk in cold, so here is the honest rundown. What to bring, what to expect, and how to make it to Carnival Tuesday still smiling.

What to pack

Keep it simple. You will be outside, in the heat, moving.

  • Old clothes for J'ouvert. The oil and paint do not wash out. Wear something you are ready to throw away. Read our Jab Jab guide so you know what is coming.
  • Comfortable shoes you do not mind ruining. Closed toe for J'ouvert. You will be on your feet for hours on real roads.
  • Sunscreen and a refillable water bottle. The Grenada sun is no joke, and the fetes are long.
  • A cross-body bag or a pouch. Something small that stays on your body while you jump.
  • Cash. Vendors, buses, and roadside food are cash-first. Grenada uses the EC dollar.
  • A cheap phone case or a waterproof pouch. Paint, rum, and water find phones.

What to expect

The days build. The season runs for days, not one night. There are shows, fetes, boat rides, and then the two big road days, Carnival Monday and Tuesday. You do not have to do all of it. Pick your spots.

J'ouvert is early and intense. It starts before dawn. It is dark, oily, and loud, and it is many people's favorite part. Go with a group if you can.

Pretty Mas is the finish. Carnival Tuesday is the Parade of the Bands, the costumes and the road. It is the daytime, everyone-welcome side of carnival.

For the full schedule, see the Spicemas 2026 guide.

Fete etiquette

  • Jump, do not just stand. The energy is the whole point. Nobody is watching you. Move.
  • Ask before you film someone. Especially the traditional mas. A little respect goes a long way.
  • Hydrate between the rum. The people who last are the people who drink water too.
  • Look out for each other. Agree on a meeting spot with your group in case phones die.

How to pace yourself

The mistake first-timers make is going all in on night one and burning out before the road. Do not do that. Sleep when you can. Eat real food, and Grenada has plenty of it, so read where to eat. Take a slow afternoon before the big days. Carnival Monday and Tuesday are the ones you flew in for, so save something for them.

Getting around and staying

Sort your room early, near where you want to be. Our where to stay guide breaks down the areas, and getting around covers buses, taxis, and the road closures during the parade.

That is the survival kit. Now go read the full Spicemas 2026 guide and start planning your week.
